Machinery Regulation (replacing Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC)
The EU Machinery Regulation replaces Directive 2006/42/EC and Council Directive 73/361/EEC and applies directly in all Member States, setting requirements for the design, manufacture and placing on the market of machinery, related products (interchangeable equipment, safety components, lifting accessories, chains, ropes and webbing, removable mechanical transmission devices) and partly completed machinery. Published in OJ L 165 on 2023-06-29, it entered into force on 2023-07-19 and applies from 2027-01-20, with some provisions applying earlier. Key features include third-party conformity assessment for Annex I high-risk machinery, digital instructions, treating persons making substantial modifications as manufacturers, and requirements for safety functions with self-evolving behaviour. It was amended by Regulation (EU) 2024/2748 (Single Market emergency procedures) and Regulation (EU) 2026/1744 (Digital Omnibus on AI).
